ESPN Boston enters the fight

ESPN Boston launched today, conveniently on the morning of the Pats season-opener…on ESPN. (Over/under on the number of ESPN Boston promos in tonight’s telecast: 6. I’m taking the over.)

First, let me be the first to say that my praise of CBSSports.com/Boston was very premature. The site is really nothing more than a landing page for The Sports Hub promotions. What it lacks in relevant, comprehensive, and compelling content, is easily found over at ESPN Boston.

Initial thoughts:

- Love the layout; clean, concise, and organized. The similarity to ESPN.com is also helpful, since it gives fans a logical base to set expectations for navigation.

- Strong stable of talent including Boston-centric Gammons and Simmons, complemented by ESPN newbie Mike Reiss and former Patriot Tedy Bruschi.

- What about Northeastern? They have BC, BU and Harvard logos in the top nav. Why not the Huskies? If you’re not going to include NU, then you shouldn’t include BU and Harvard; just stick with the only BCS-affiliated school in the city (BC).

- Their resources will be unmatched…

- The radio situation continues to be a big question mark, especially with WEEI’s potential involvement.
